THE COMMUNION OF SAINTS
The Meaning of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day
The Church's celebration of All Saints' Day on November 1 is preceded by All Hallows' Eve, the origin of the name Halloween. The word hallow means "holy", and these days remind us that our lives are ordered toward eternity. In Christ, death is not the end of our story, but the passage to the eternal life for which God created us.
These celebrations invite us to reflect on the Communion of Saints: the spiritual union of all the faithful in Christ, whether on earth, in heaven, or undergoing purification. Traditionally, the Church speaks of three states:
- The Church Militant: the faithful still striving for holiness on earth
- The Church Triumphant: the saints who rejoice in God's presence in heaven
- The Church Suffering: the faithful departed being purified in purgatory.
Though separated by death, we remain united in Christ, sharing in His life and assisting one another through prayer.
On All Saints' Day, we honor all those who have entered the glory of heaven, both the saints officially recognized by the Church and the countless holy men and women known only to God. We look to their example as we pursue holiness and ask for their intercession, trusting that they continue to pray for us as members of Christ's Mystical Body.
On All Souls' Day, November 2, we pray especially for the faithful departed undergoing purification in purgatory before entering the fullness of heaven. From the earliest centuries, Christians have offered prayers and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass for the dead. Our prayers are an act of charity, entrusting the souls of the departed to God's mercy and expressing our hope in the Resurrection.
Throughout November, our parish will make available the Book of the Dead, in which you are invited to write the names of loved ones who have died. We will remember them in our prayers throughout the month. As we honor the saints in heaven and pray for the faithful departed, may we grow in hope of the day when, by God's mercy, we will share eternal life with Him and be reunited with all those who have died in Christ.
