14th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Read this week's bulletin to see the latest from St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.

Read the following reflection while viewing the front cover of this week's bulletin:

The Apostles Going Forth to Preach by the Limbourg Brothers (found on the cover), created around 1411-1416, presents a rich depiction of Christ’s followers setting out to proclaim the Gospel to the world.

In this miniature, the apostles are depicted in harmonious rows, stepping forward from a city gate, clothed in flowing robes of brilliant blue, red, and gold. The architectural backdrop, rendered with Gothic arches and fortified walls, symbolizes both the security they leave behind and the structured, ordered world they are called to evangelize.

Spiritually, the painting embodies the moment of transition from disciple to missionary. The apostles, having received the Holy Spirit, now carry the message of salvation to the ends of the earth. Their ordered formation reflects unity and purpose, while their steady movement evokes Christ’s command to “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). The contrast between the enclosed city and the expansive world beyond reminds us that the Gospel is not meant to remain behind walls but to reach every corner of creation.

For the viewer, The Apostles Going Forth to Preach serves as both a historical glimpse and a personal call. We, like the apostles, are sent forth, often from the comfort of what we know, into a world that longs for truth, beauty, and hope. The Limbourg Brothers, with their attention to order and grace, subtly remind us that the mission is not chaotic, but guided by Christ Himself, who sends ordinary people to carry extraordinary news to the world.
