Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Read this week's bulletin to see the latest from St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.
Last Sunday, with the celebration of the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, the Church entered into Ordinary Time. This transition marks the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry and invites us to walk with Him as disciples in the everyday unfolding of His life and teachings.
As the Catechism reminds us, “the liturgical year unfolds the whole mystery of Christ” (CCC 1168), and during Ordinary Time we are invited to learn from the ordinary moments of the Lord’s ministry how to live as His disciples. Ordinary Time is not “ordinary” in the sense of being unimportant; rather, it is the season in which the Church reflects on how Christ meets us in daily life and forms us through steady faithfulness, prayer, and charity.
As Lent approaches on February 18th, we are encouraged to begin preparing our hearts for that sacred season of repentance and renewal. At the same time, Ordinary Time reminds us that growth in discipleship does not begin only with Lent. It is in these weeks of ordinary faithfulness we are deeply formed as we listen to the Word, develop habits of prayer, and live the Gospel in simple, concrete ways. By living Ordinary Time well, we prepare ourselves to receive the graces of Lent more fully and to continue growing as disciples throughout the entire year.
